Why ATO Debt Is Becoming a Bigger Issue for Business Borrowers

Clean records, realistic repayments and early preparation can improve approval confidence

Why ATO Debt Is Becoming a Bigger Issue for Business Borrowers?w=400

Recent small business lending commentary points to a practical issue that is becoming harder for borrowers to ignore: outstanding tax debt can materially affect how lenders assess a business loan application.
While many Australian businesses use finance to smooth seasonal cash flow, buy stock, fund equipment or manage growth, lenders are paying closer attention to whether unpaid Australian Taxation Office obligations signal short-term pressure or deeper financial strain.

This does not mean a business with tax debt is automatically locked out of finance. Some lenders will still consider applications where there is a clear payment arrangement, stable trading history and evidence that the business can meet both its tax commitments and new loan repayments. However, the days of treating ATO arrears as a minor background item appear to be fading. For borrowers, the key issue is no longer just how much revenue the business generates, but how consistently it manages obligations as they fall due.

The shift matters for sole traders, contractors and small companies that may have delayed tax payments during slower trading periods. A lender reviewing bank statements, BAS, financial statements and existing liabilities may ask whether the proposed loan will strengthen cash flow or simply cover a recurring shortfall. That distinction can influence approval chances, pricing, security requirements and loan size.

Business owners preparing to apply should get their records in order before approaching lenders. That means reconciling accounts, confirming any ATO payment plan in writing, checking whether recent bank conduct supports the application, and being realistic about the amount needed. It may also help to estimate repayments under different terms and interest-rate assumptions, rather than relying on the lowest possible monthly figure.

The broader lesson is that finance applications are increasingly judged on purpose and resilience. Borrowing to purchase productive equipment, manage a confirmed contract or consolidate a clearly documented obligation may be viewed differently from borrowing to patch a repeated cash flow gap. Applicants should be ready to explain how the loan supports revenue, margin or stability.

For borrowers who are self-employed, newly established or carrying tax arrears, early professional assistance may be a useful step. A well-prepared application cannot remove every risk, but it may help match the business to lenders that understand complex trading circumstances and avoid unnecessary declines. In a selective lending market, preparation remains one of the strongest tools a business owner has.
