In a landmark development for Australia's automotive industry, electric vehicles (EVs) have achieved a significant milestone, accounting for 29.6% of new car sales in May 2026.
This surge underscores the nation's accelerating shift towards sustainable transportation.

Leading this charge is the Tesla Model Y, which emerged as Australia's best-selling vehicle for the month, recording 5,605 units sold. This marks the first time an electric vehicle has topped the national monthly sales charts, highlighting the growing consumer preference for EVs.

Overall, 30,618 EVs were sold in May, comprising 21,303 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and 9,315 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). BEV sales more than doubled year-on-year, capturing 20.6% of the market, while PHEV sales saw a remarkable 200% increase compared to May 2025.

Several factors contribute to this upward trend. Lower running costs associated with EVs, supportive government policies, and an expanding range of vehicle choices have collectively driven consumer interest. Additionally, the presence of competitive financing options has made EV ownership more accessible to a broader audience.

For prospective buyers, this surge in EV popularity presents both opportunities and considerations. The increasing availability of models across various price points means more choices tailored to individual needs. However, it's essential to stay informed about the evolving market dynamics, including potential changes in government incentives and the expansion of charging infrastructure.
